CAPE PERON MASTER PLAN - WE’RE DELIVERING TOILET FACILITIES AT POINT PERON!

08 November 2024

In 2023 the Cook Labor Government announced that we were giving Cape Peron Reserve ‘Class A’ status – the highest level of environmental protection.

We are now furthering our commitment to protecting and enhancing this natural beauty with the release of the Cape Peron Recreation Master Plan.

The master plan has been produced by the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions, and involved extensive stakeholder consultation, including a session I hosted in my office with stakeholders from the region.

This plan sets out the future management objectives of the reserve and provides clear direction for enhancing visitors experience to Point Peron in a way that is culturally and environmentally appropriate.

I know our local community highly values Point Peron – so this is a big win for Rockingham.

The plan sets out many opportunities to boost the amenity of Point Peron that will also encourage sustainable tourism to Rockingham. These include:

  • Improved lighting and surveillance at the western cape car park;
  • Additional car parking, toilets, picnic facilities and a permanent vendor stall;
  • Three different sites that were previously cleared for development to be made available for the provision of short stay accommodation;
  • The installation of dual use pathways to connect the reserve with the Rockingham Foreshore and Shoalwater Bay;
  • The commitment to continue working with Traditional Owners to retain cultural heritage sites within the reserve, and develop further Aboriginal tourism opportunities, such as tours, art and yarning;
  • The rehabilitation of Bush Forever Sites in the reserve, including the former Swan Brewery site; and
  • The provision of a visitor node and wayfinding signs throughout the reserve.

I am proud to have secured $1 million in the 2024-25 State Budget for the first round of upgrades – including toilets and café facilities!

My mum grew up fishing at Point Peron with her brother and sisters, and I have fond memories of my childhood spent walking the trails and spotting crabs.

I’m proud that our Government is acting to preserve and enhance our beautiful Point Peron so that future generations can enjoy what our natural environment has to offer.
